Culture and nature: Harlingen is the place to be!
Harlingen is adjecent to the sea, which makes it a unique city with lots to offer. The historical facades, extraordinary shops and cosy cafés are worth your visit. Harlingen is connected to one of the biggest protected environmental areas of Western Europe: the Wadden Sea (Waddenzee). The city is a hub to different ways to explore the Wad, for example by sailing or fishing boat. The VVV Tourist Office is happy to inform you about the possibilities.
Harlingen: worth your visit throughout the year
If you check the yearly events in Harlingen, there is only one conclusion: Harlingen is alive! In spring there are three sailing races. The Harlingen-Terschelling Sailing Race, Harlingen-Terschelling Sloepenrace and the Catamaran Race. In June you can visit Lanenkaatsen. Kaatsen is a traditional Frisian outdoor sport, where people play tennis with their hands.
In summer you can enjoy Harlinger Street Festival: music and performances throughout the entire city. During the summer holidy the ancient inner city celebrates Tobbedag (Tub Day) with an outdoor market and music. The last week of August you can enjoy the Visserijdagen (Fisherman's Days) and September offers Waddensea Jazz Festival. Early November holds the last race of the year Wadden Race Sail Charter Ships.
